ASSOCIATION OF AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

The Aeronautical Association of the Madras Institute of Technology was established in the year of 1957. The Association of Aeronautical Engineers (AAE) at MIT is one of the ever-buzzing associations with umpteen numbers of activities to promote the interests of budding aerospace community. It is funded and run by the students and faculty members of the Aerospace Engineering Department. Various co-curricular activities like guest lectures, industrial visits, aero modeling activities etc. are conducted throughout the year by the association including a technical symposium FLIGHT annually. 

 

FLIGHT is a National Level Technical Symposium with a plethora of events in the field of Aerospace engineering. This is where the most brilliant minds from the best institutes across the nation turn up every year in order to compete and prove their talents.

 

Events which provide hands-on experience to students such as Mini and Micro Air Vehicle, Bottle Rocketry, Bridge building, CATIA modelling, Paper presentation, Boomerang contest, Glider and paper plane contests are hosted during this Technical Symposium. This festival provides a platform for many students to expose their talents and to cultivate fresh thoughts. Thus FLIGHT always turns out to be the biggest treasury of practical knowledge for them. The awe and admiration for the flying machines never dies in human hearts which is the greatest strength of Technical Symposiums of this kind. Even people, who are alien to the faculty of Aerospace, prove to have the best interests in knowing the magic of making things fly.FLIGHT never disappoints them either.

 

FLIGHT also provides a platform to develop a very good rapport and healthy relations with students, institutes and companies.

MOTIVATION

One of the essential elements of the education process is taking up sponsored research activities by the University teaching staff. The sponsored research programmes definitely stimulate the intellect, add to the laboratory capability, bring people in contact with peers in R&D/industry, result in peer recognition, provide opportunity for National/International contacts, collaboration, Conference presentations/Journal Publications and finally help in training and placement of students also.

 

BACKGROUND

Having a great faith on this, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam , the then Scientific Advisor to Defense Ministry and as the chief of DRDO, granted Rs.30 Lakhs in the beginning of the year 2000, as corpus fund and established the “Prof. K A V Pandalai Memorial AR & DB Chair”. Eminent Scientist / Personalities from Aerospace Industry would be invited to take the position as chair Professor to take care of the activities who would get an honorarium from the interest earned from the above corpus fund.

The Chair came into existence since February 2000 with a corpus fund of Rs. 30. Lakhs.

Prof. Rajaram Nagappa, former Associate Director, VSSC , Thiruvananthapuram  took over as the first Chairperson in July 2000 and occupied the chair till  January 2007. From 2008 to 2015 Prof.V.Kanagarajan served as a Chairperson.

 

OBJECTIVE

  • To enhance research activities in the department.
  • To promote inter disciplinary research activities in the university.
  • To provide a forum for academic exchange programmes.
  • To provide liaison with research laboratories in specialized areas.

 

RESEARCH

The Department has research programs leading to M.S and Ph.D Degrees. The faculty in the Department concentrates on three major field of Aeronautical Engineering viz., Aerodynamics, Aircraft Structures and Propulsion. The Department has the potential to carry out research in Composite Structures, Computational Mechanics, Non – Destructive Testing. In recent past Department has taken up several projects from various funding agency and the details of which are given. Also the faculty has carried out several projects through Centre for Aerospace Research. The Department staff has collaborative research with Prof. Yukio Tamura, Tokyo Polytechnic University through J.S.P.S (Japan Society for Promotion of Science), Government of Japan. Also the Department has taken steps in having collaborative research activities and staff student exchange programmes with Tokyo Polytechnic University, Japan and University of Stuttgart, Germany. To improve more research activities, a Chair in Memory of Prof. K.A.V.Pandalai, a former Professor and Head, Department of Aerospace Engineering, has been created in the year 2000 with the financial support from Aeronautical Research and Development Board (AR&DB) Ministry of Defence. Under the chair a number of research activities related to Defence and Space Programmes are being taken up.
