Presently, Central Workshop, MIT, is attached to the Department of Production Technology. The Professor in-charge of this workshop is Dr.R.Sivaramakrishnan. It is well supported by one General Foreman, one Foreman, one Instructor, six ITI qualified Technicians, one electrical supervisor and three lab assistants.
It caters to the needs of the machining Process lab requirement for II year Production Technology students, in which students are given practice in the areas of Turning, Threading, Shaping, Drilling, Milling and Slotting. Basic Engineering practice lab is common to all the first year students. The first year students are given practice in the areas of Lathe works, Carpentry works, Welding, Plumbing, Basic of Electrical and Electronics, Smithy, Air conditioning and Refrigeration parts, and Basic Electrical Connections.
Workshop extends its facilities to most of the UG and PG students to carry out their fabrication projects.
This workshop is also useful to carry out research activities in the areas of Tool condition Monitoring and suppression of Tool vibration by Rheological damping fluids, Cylindrical Grinding of Composites, Hot Machining, Force Measurement in Machining and Optimization of Process Parameters in wire EDM.
The Central Workshop has organized 4 short term training programmes under TEQIP in the areas of
- Special Machines (2009)
- CNC Machines and Programmes (2008)
- Welding and Machining Process (2007)
- Plumbing ,Electrical and Carpentry works (2007)
The major equipments of Central Workshop are
- 100 Ton Capacity Hydraulic press
- CNC Wire EDM
- Retrofitted Lathe
- CNC Slant Bed Lathe
