The Entrance Examination for Tamil Nadu Professional Courses will be conducted on 22nd and 23rd April, 2000 by Anna University. The details about the issue of application forms will be announced by 6th February, 2000. 
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, our outstanding alumni, has been appointed as Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India with the rank of Cabinet Minister. Before this new assignement he was the Head, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which is engaged in indigenously building state-of-the-art weapon systems ranging from rifles to ballistic missiles.

GOLDEN JUBILEE

The Madras Institute of Technology celebrating its Golden Jubilee. To commemorate the event, the MIT Alumni Association organised a four-day technical exhibition at the Anna University Campus between 20th August and 23rd August. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Klaus Shroeder, Counsel General of Federal Republic of Germany. The event coincided with the Industry-Academic Partnership program. The exhibition was aimed mostly at the small and medium industries. The stalls displayed models of finished products and components in different fields. The focus was mainly on Information Technology, Automobile and Instrumentation. It was more of student-oriented industrial exhibition. Most of the stall were put up by leading industrial houses. It was defined as a unique attempt as it gives scope for the engineering students to have an exposure to the activities of top business houses.
 

An Industry-Academic Partnership Programme was organised by Centre for University-Industry Collaboration (CUIC) of Anna University on 20th August 1999. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony our Vice Chancellor Dr. A. Kalanidhi said that the varsity would be launching web based education to help the teaching staff of various technical institutions. Thiru R.S. Nirjar, member-secretary, AICTE, New Delhi, assured all help from AICTE towards the programmes involving Anna University. In a special address Mr. Klaus Shroeder, Counsul General of Federal Republic of Germany, said a good interaction between the academia and industry was required to overcome the challenges of globalised economy. Thiru K. Medappa, President MIT Alumni Association, also spoke. Professor
N. Baluswamy, Director, CUIC, welcomed the gathering. Dr. G. Karthikeyan, proposed a vote of thanks.

  • Dr. S. Renganathan, Professor of School of Instrumentation and Electronics has been designated as Dean of Engineering (MIT) and Dean, Students (MIT Campus) with effect from 15.2.99 for a period of 3 years.

  • Dr. P. R. Nakkeeran, Professor of Production Engineering, has taken over charge as Head of the Department of Production Engineering (MIT) on 17.1.99.

A NEW M.E. PROGRAMME - IN MECHATRONICS

The M.E.degree programme in MECHATRONICS was inaugurated by Dr.M.Ananda Krishnan, Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education, Chennai on 28th January, 1999 at the MIT Campus. Dr.G.Ramaiyan, Dean, Academic Courses, Anna University, presided. Dr.A.Mathialagan, Director (Academic) TANITIC, Chennai and Mr.K.S.Shetty, Managing Director, Tespa Tools (P) LTD, Chennai offered their felicitations. 

The M.E.Mechatronics degree programme offered by the Department of Production Technology, Anna University (MIT Campus) is a Synergistic fusion of Mechanical, Electronics and Computer Engineering. This AICTE approved programme is the first of its kind in India and is launched in commomoration with the MIT Golden Jubliee Celebrations. The course is of  1 1/2 years duration with an intake capacity of 15 students (10 Non sponsored and 5 sponsored). INDIRA GANDHI AWARD TO ABDUL KALAM

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, Government of India and the most distinguished alumnus of Madras Institute of Tecnology, Anna University has been selected for the prestegious Indira Gandhi award for national integration for the year 1997. The award will be presented by the congress (I) President Mrs. Sonia Gandhi on October 31.

The award was instituted by the Congress (I) in its centenary year to uphold the cause of national integration and understanding and to give recognition to outstanding contribution to the cause by individuals and institutions. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 1.51 lakhs and a citation.

Anna University wishes many more honour to Dr. Abdul Kalam in coming years!
