University, was established on 4th September, 1978 as a unitary type of
University. The University was formed by bringing together and integrating
well known technical institutions in the City of Madras. The M.I.T at Chromepet
constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares
was established in July 1949 as an All India Technological Institutionwith
the two-fold object of providing (1) Engineering education of University
standard in specialised fields and (2) Facilities for research in these
and allied fields, free from regional limitations both in regard to its
staff and students.
